Black Ops 2 will feature branching missions and the return of the Zombies mode, Treyarch has confirmed.

While specific details are thin on the ground, Treyarch's Mark Lamia said that the popular survival mode would be bigger than ever.

"If you like zombies, you're going to be really happy with what we're doing with Black Ops 2. it's our biggest, most ambitious zombies effort ever," Lamia explained on Activision web show Roll Call.

He also revealed that the game would contain "non-linear gameplay elements" which take the form of Strike Force missions.

Strike Force missions crop up during the single-player campiagn, impacting the way the story plays out, reports Joystiq.

Selecting one Strike Force mission blocks the others, while failure to best the side quests can make the game more challenging during subsequent levels.

The missions also allow for a degree of freedom, as players can choose whether to tackle the levels head on, control troops from above or use vehicles.
