Capcom wants augmented reality for future 'Steel Battalion' game

Capcom wants augmented reality for a future Steel Battalion game, it has been revealed.

Producer Kenji Kataoka said that the development team "partially" experimented with the idea for upcoming Xbox 360 title Heavy Armour, but hopes that a future Kinect device would provide full immersion.

"I'd like to see augmented reality combined with the technology of Kinect," Kataoka told Digital Spy.

"So you'd actually see the game - the game is around you, you'd see everything visually around you, and it's not just gestures. You're interacting with what you are seeing there, that's actually an augmented reality.

Discussing how the technology could possibly work, Kataoka said: "We'd give you a set of markers in your room, and when you wear AR glasses and [are] using Kinect, it would detect your head movements and everything else you do.

"You turn right, and the screen on your glasses would then move in with you. You would be in a cockpit 360, and anything you do, depending on where you are seeing, would change. it would just be 100% immersion.

"The only thing you wouldn't have would be tactile feedback. That's the only thing you'd be lacking."

Kataoka also discussed a number of desired features for the next Kinect device, including an improved resolution and depth of field.

Steel Battalion: Heavy Armour will release exclusively on Xbox 360 on June 19 in North America and on June 22 across Europe.
