'Cyberpunk' announced as CD Projekt's next title

By
Cyberpunk has been announced as the next game from developer CD Projekt.

The title will be based on the pen-and-paper role-playing game of the same name, taking place in a futuristic setting filled with cybernetic implants and high tech weaponry.

CD Projekt stressed that the game is being designed for a mature and demanding audience, with a non-linear story that can be shaped by complex character interactions and player choices similar to The Witcher series.

Players will be able to define their own character from a range of customisable classes. Though no final classes were revealed, mercenaries and hackers were offered as examples of varying play styles the game would accommodate.

"For over two decades, I've been proud to say that cyberpunk's been the gold standard of what it means to be a true cyberpunk game," said original pen-and-paper Cyberpunk designer Mike Pondsmith.

"But over all that time we haven't found the right team to bring our cyberpunk world to full digital life - until now. CD Projekt Red is the team we've been hoping for.

"Their incredible work on The Witcher and The Witcher 2 shows that they share the same dedication and love of great games that we do at Talsorian.

"I'm especially stoked that they want our participation in making this game a fantastic project that will live up to everything cyberpunk fans (old and new) have been waiting for. Trust me - this game is going to rock."

The Cyberpunk pen-and-paper game originally released in 1988 as 'Cyberpunk 2013', with later editions released in 1990 and 2005.

No release date or target platforms have been announced yet for Cyberpunk. Given CD Projekt's history a PC release can be assumed, while there is the possibility of a console port after the studio's experience with The Witcher 2: Enhanced Edition.
