David Perry disappointed with 'Earthworm Jim HD'

By
David Perry has expressed his disappointment with the 2010 remake of Earthworm Jim.

The creator of the 16-bit platforming series said that Earthworm Jim HD by Gameloft failed to offer the same attention to detail with its animation as the originals.

"The mistake that people make is that they never come and say, 'Hey, we're going to make an Earthworm Jim, can you guys help with that?' because there are things in there that they just don't understand," he told Digital Spy at Develop in Brighton.

"They'll take the five animation frames, and think by going, 'One, two, three, four, five', that's actually what the intention is, but that's not how it works at all.

"When you get into that level of animation, there's delays and pauses that add so much to the quality of that animation."

Perry explained that animators use detailed scripts that outline how frames can be reconstructed with proper timing, a technique which was not used for the HD remake.

"When someone else comes along and just grabs the frames out of the Genesis and puts them on the screen, it's not the same thing. When I see these things I think, 'Oh Christ'," he said.

"I'm just one of the people that appreciates what animators do. I get it, I understand what they do, I get that this matters to them, and it must be so upsetting, you know. It's like you make music and someone decides to play it on mono, bringing the sample rate down."

Perry said that none of the original team were approached by Gameloft for Earthworm Jim HD, which "makes no sense".

He added: "It's funny, because one of the publishers did reach out to me recently saying they are thinking of doing one and can [they] have the source code, and the answer is, 'Of course you can'. I'd much rather it was good."

David Perry created Earthworm Jim during his time at Shiny Entertainment, alongside MDK, Wild 9 and Enter the Matrix.

Perry later founded Gaikai, a cloud gaming service which was recently acquired by Sony.
