'Minecraft' developer sued for Android patent infringement

By
Minecraft developer Mojang is being sued for patent infringement.

Mojang faces legal trouble over the way it delivers mobile content for Android phones, particularly the way it checks whether users are authorised to access content - locking out those without access.

The Minecraft developer is one of ten companies, including Microsoft, Electronic Arts and Square Enix, that have been named in a legal suit by Texas-based tech firm Uniloc, reports BBC News.

Having confirmed the lawsuit in an earlier tweet, Minecraft creator Markus "Notch" Persson vowed to use all available resources to fight the case.

"Unfortunately for them, they're suing us over a software patent. If needed, I will throw piles of money at making sure they don't get a cent," Persson tweeted.

"Software patents are plain evil. Innovation within software is basically free, and it's growing incredibly rapid. Patents only slow it down," he added.

Uniloc founder Ric Richardson has defended his company's stance on the case, requesting an end to personal attacks and arguing that patents "stop people stealing a technology you invented and letting you have a fair shot at making a living from it".

Minecraft debuted on PC in November last year following an extended beta period. An Xbox 360 port was released earlier this month, selling 1 million copies in just five days.

Mojang was forced to hand out refunds to customers with standard definition television sets who purchased the Xbox 360 edition as it was not clearly indicated that multiplayer mode is incompatible with the technology.

Minecraft - Pocket Edition is available for iOS and Android devices through the App Store and Google Play respectively.

Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition holds the record for most first-day sales on Xbox Live Arcade.
