The game will be an original sequel to the popular freeware indie games Knytt and Knytt Stories. A hallmark of the platforming series has been an emphasis on exploring vast environments, and the newest title promises to continue that tradition.
It is being developed for PC, Mac and Linux, as well as consoles for the first time in the series. Knytt Underground will release on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita through a partnership with Green Hill Studios and publisher Ripstone.
Green Hill Studios has also revealed that the PlayStation versions will contain unique exclusive content.
"Knytt Underground is the biggest game I've ever developed and is the first game where I feel that I have a story to tell," Nicklas "Nifflas" Nygren said.
"It's about the big questions; trying to understand life and our place in it - and failing completely."
Knytt Underground is expected to release later this year on PS3, Vita, PC, Mac and Linux.
