The retro-inspired sequel moves away from the 8-bit visual presentation of its predecessor, introducing 3D backdrops and 16-bit graphics.
Despite the more elaborate visuals, the title appears to share similar gameplay mechanics to the original.
Releasing for Xbox Live Arcade and PSN, Runner 2 will feature a brand new multiplayer element, checkpoints, branching paths, unlockable clothes and characters, loop-de-loops and dancing.
It will be playable at PAX Prime in Seattle on August 31.
It is the follow-up to 2010 WiiWare title Bit.Trip Runner, which was released as part of the Nintendo Wii and 3DS Bit.Trip collections.
Developed by Gaijin Games, the Bit.Trip series is known for its rhythm-based, retro-style gameplay.
