Likening the multiplayer aspect to speed chess, the turn-based combat will feature a timer, which will increase the tension and ensure that the better tactician wins the round.
Prior to each multiplayer battle, players will be awarded with 10,000 in-game points for that match, which can be used to purchase squad members and items.
Users will be able to combine human units with alien soldiers - customising their selections with special abilities - or opt to invest more points in extra soldiers as means of overwhelming the opposition.
Announced in January, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a tactical sci-fi reimagining of 1994's UFO: Enemy Unknown and is developed by acclaimed strategy game studio Firaxis Games.
Players will command a global anti-alien defence force, where threats from outer space must be identified and the population at large kept safe.
The game will launch ahead of the first-person shooter reboot of the XCOM series, which was delayed to release in early 2013.
XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC from October 9 in North America and October 12 across Europe.
