The firm's next console will feature 4K resolution support in line with a rumoured new range of Sony TVs, reports Yahoo.
The PS4's supposed visual capabilities will be used to entice users to upgrade to the new sets, much like the PS3 was used to push Blu-ray.
Sony's current console supports 1920x1080 visual playback, although few games utilise the maximum resolution.
Hardware details have apparently been leaked recently about the PlayStation 4, with its codename said to be 'Orbis'.
EA's president of Labels Frank Gibeau recently revealed that he had seen both the PS4 and new Xbox, and suggested that the consoles would introduce gaming to a further billion people.
An alleged leaked document for the new Xbox emerged earlier this year, while the console is reported to be at the manufacturing stage in Texas.
Sony is likely to send the PS3 off with games such as Puppeteer, Beyond: Two Souls and The Last of Us.
