'XCOM: Enemy Unknown' Casualties of War cinematic trailer - watch

By
XCOM: Enemy Unknown has been given a new trailer by 2K Games.

The 'Casualties of War' video outlines the enormity of the task facing soldiers charged with defending against an alien invasion.

Featuring a combination of cinematics and gameplay footage, the trailer showcases some of the game's impressive enemies and technology.

Urging players to be careful with the lives of their troops, the narrator warns that 'few will survive to see the end of the conflict', and that fewer still will possess the skills to end it.

Likened to "speed chess" at last week's gamescom Expo in Germany, the game's multiplayer mode features a timer, aimed at increasing the tension and ensuring that the better tactician wins the round.

Users will be able to combine human units with alien soldiers - customising their selections with special abilities - or opt to invest more points in extra soldiers as a means of overwhelming the opposition.

Announced in January, XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a tactical sci-fi reimagining of 1994's UFO: Enemy Unknown and is developed by acclaimed strategy game studio Firaxis Games.

Players will command a global anti-alien defence force, where threats from outer space must be identified and the population at large kept safe.

The game will launch ahead of the first-person shooter reboot of the XCOM series, which was delayed to release in early 2013.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC from October 9 in North America and October 12 across Europe.
