Project Hell has been announced by Dead Island developer Techland.

The fantasy first-person hack-and-slash game started out as a weapons mod for Dead Island. Describing the mod as "brutally fun and addictive", the team began work on a game prototype.

Techland has since been given independence to develop the title, codenamed Project Hell, releasing a number of concept images on its blog site.

The team is encouraging user-participation, requesting feedback and ideas from the community.

"Everything posted here is work in progress, which you can comment [on] convincing us in our greatness or causing us to go home and rethink our lives. We will also ask for your help in making some decisions," reads a Techland blog post.

"Our main goal is to make a game we can all enjoy playing so don't expect unicorns and fairies - we prefer breaking through hordes of undead minions only to slaughter their devilish and loathsome masters in a bloody boss-fight.

"To achieve that we'll use our experience already gained in game development and enhanced technology from Dead Island.

"We believe that we can make something really unique and thrilling and share it with you. Keep your fingers crossed."

Techland's previous release Dead Island launched to mixed reviews last September.

Releasing with a large day-one patch, the game sparked controversy for a sexist slur hidden within its code.

A sequel titled Dead Island: Riptide will reportedly be unveiled soon. A follow-up was rumoured after original developer Techland filed a trademark for the name Dead World.
