Atari has teamed up with Microsoft to launch web-based versions of its classic games.

Pong, Asteroids, Centipede and more will run ad-free in Internet Explorer 9 and 10, or with sponsored messages in other browsers, to celebrate the publisher's 40th anniversary.

The games have also been optimised for touch-screen controls to showcase the potential of HTML5 technology, but are fully playable with keyboard and mouse.

"I would say that the fact they are designed specifically for touch, that they have multiplayer and that they tie into people's social networks make this an exciting partnership," Microsoft's Ian Moulster told TechRadar.

The games were previously reissued via Atari's website and through the mobile apps, but the new versions have received graphic enhancements as well as the updated interface.

The revised Atari classics are scheduled to go live later today (August 30).
