Lightning Returns will be a standalone game rounding off the character's story. The adventure sees the eponymous heroine on a mission to save the world with 13 days left on the doomsday clock.

The title is set on a chain of four islands called Navus Partus, which players travel between on a monorail. Locations will alter based on a day-night cycle, and social networking will play a part in the game through a soon-to-launch Facebook service.

Lightning will be based on her Final Fantasy XIII incarnation and will be more powerful. Players will be given far more customisation options than ever before when it comes to tailoring weapons and costumes.

Greater freedom of movement during battles will be offered, with Lightning able to jump and climb around the environments, but Square Enix is keen to stress that this is not an action-based title.

Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be released for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Further details of the game will be unveiled on September 4.
