Wii U to support GameCube downloads?

By
The Wii U might support GameCube downloads, Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime has suggested.

When asked whether GameCube games would come to the Virtual Console, Fils-Aime told Kotaku: "That is a great question. And personally I would love for that to happen, but we have nothing to announce right now."

The comments were said to be playfully delivered with a smile, suggesting that GameCube compatibility could be on its way.

The comments echo those of Nintendo employee Amber McCollom, who last year said that GameCube titles would be available from WiiWare.

"Nintendo's history usually goes back one system," McCollom explained. "The Wii was compatible with GameCube and Wii U will be compatible with Wii and that's pretty traditional in launches from Nintendo.

"Actually the GameCube discs will not be compatible with Wii U, but a number of the games that were playable on GameCube can be downloaded from WiiWare."

Currently, the Virtual Console hosts N64, SNES and NES titles, as well as Sega Master System, Mega Drive, TurboGrafx, Neo Geo and the Commodore 64 releases.

Nintendo recently confirmed that the Wii U will launch on November 18 in North America and November 30 in Europe with a basic model and Premium bundle.

The basic pack includes a white Wii U console with 8GB of memory, a Wii U gamepad, AC adapter and a HDMI cable.

The Premium set will offer the system in black with 32GB of memory, a copy of Nintendo Land, Wii U sensor bar, a gamepad charging cradle, stands for the gamepad and console and Nintendo Network Premium membership.
