The first-person shooter, which was first revealed in 2010, has now become a third-person shooter with squad-based elements, according to Kotaku.
A leaked marketing survey suggested that you will be able to order squad members around to perform various actions, similar to in SOCOM or Republic Commando.
Original developer and BioShock 2 creator 2K Marin is still developing the project.
Meanwhile, it has been suggested that the title could be a cheaper downloadable title as opposed to a full-priced retail release, similar to Ubisoft's I Am Alive.
Publisher 2K announced that it had delayed XCOM into 2013 earlier this year.
Set as a prequel to the classic strategy games, XCOM has players fighting to stop an alien invasion in the 1960s. Elements of the strategy series remain intact, as players issue squad commands through non-linear missions.
Meanwhile, strategy reboot XCOM: Enemy Unknown will be released on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC from October 9 in North America and October 12 across Europe.
