The latest version of Windows 8's beta allows users to pay for video content using cash instead of Microsoft's own currency system, according to The Verge.
While Microsoft Points are still available, all default transactions took place using a credit card.
It could mean that Microsoft Points could be phased out with the introduction of Windows 8 and other systems, including Xbox 360.
Xbox 360 currently uses Microsoft Points for purchasing Live Arcade games, GamerTags, videos and downloadable content.
The next dashboard update is currently scheduled for this month, and is set to offer a designed interface, SmartGlass functionality and rumoured streaming service Xbox Music.
