Sony marketing director Fergal Gara said the landmark number was a "historic moment" for PlayStation.
"This is another historic moment for the PlayStation brand, and something I'm incredibly proud of," he said.
"I'd like to thank all our consumers, retailers and third party partners for helping us achieve this figure, and look forward to continued success."
Launching in 2007, the PS3 remains the only console to support Blu-ray movies, and has introduced a number of new Sony franchises including LittleBigPlanet, Resistance and Uncharted.

Last month a second PS3 redesign was released, offering a smaller, lighter system with a top-loading disc tray, boosting sales of the system by 138 percent.
Earlier today (October 11) Sony showcased a redesigned PlayStation Store to go live later this month.
