Microsoft announced the milestone during its quarterly earnings report, stating that it shifted a further 1.7m during the period in question.

The platform holder generated revenue of $1.95 billion (£1.2bn) during the quarter, despite selling some 600,000 fewer consoles that it did during the same period last year.
Comparatively, Sony revealed that the PlayStation 3 had sold 63m units as of March this year, while the Nintendo Wii hit 96m units in June.
There was a significant increase in Xbox Live subscriptions during the three-month period, with the network service seeing gains of 15%. More than 40m subscribers now make use of the platform.
Microsoft has been tipped to unveil a successor to the Xbox 360 in 2013, with job listings and leaked documents supporting such rumours.
