A petition for a new TimeSplitters has been backed by franchise owner Crytek.

CEO and president Cevat Yerli said that it needs more signatures to represent fan interest in order for a remake or sequel to happen.

"There is actually a petition running online trying to bring the fanbase together. But unfortunately the petition doesn't look that convincing," he told Game Informer.

"If the petition picks up it will be an even better argument for us. At a personal level, I'm a big fan of TimeSplitters 2.

"For me, I would love to see the game out there, as a newborn HD version or what not. I definitely would love to see it. But the case of turning this into a business decision is still difficult, despite the fact that there was a Twitter request feed to test the waters.

"And now the petition, it just seems to be as we expected, as it was when it was Free Radical."

He said there is a "very hardcore market" that is verbal about a comeback, and that 300,000 signatures would be enough for Crytek to make a case to "decision makers" and "share holders".

At the time of writing, only 37,000 signatures have been attributed to the petition.

TimeSplitters developer Free Radical Design was purchased by Crytek in 2009. The company has firmly denied that a new TimeSplitters is in development.

It was recently revealed that both a HD remake of TimeSplitters 2 and Killer Instinct were in the works.

Crytek has since hinted that TimeSplitters could return as a free-to-play game in the future.
