'Black Ops 2': 'Call of Duty' sales down 20% year-on-year

By
Call of Duty sales are down by 20%, it has been revealed.

Despite Black Ops 2 recently becoming the fourth biggest UK launch of all time, year-on-year Call of Duty sales are down by 20%, reports MCV.
Black Ops 2 is, however, ahead of the video game retail market, which has dropped by 28% in the past year.

One retailer claimed that Black Ops 2 was its least profitable game of the year, while others have suggested that Activision's expectations were too high.

HMV's Andy Pinder was pleased with the sales, however, and believes that the game will continue to sell through the festive period.

"It's not easy creating stand-out events when so many retailers opened around the country at the same time. So perspective is called for, particularly given the consumer backdrop and the number of major releases," he said.

"Given all these factors, we're happy with our performance on this title, which we believe will keep selling throughout the festive period and beyond, so any final judgement should be reserved until after then."

While sales are down, Black Ops 2 generated $500 million in 24 hours, making it the highest-earning day-one Call of Duty title to date.

Black Ops 2 is available on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC. It is also available on the Wii U in North America, and will release alongside the console on November 30 in Europe.
