In addition to Super Mario 3D and Professor Layton, users can also choose from New Art Academy, New Style Boutique and Freakyforms Deluxe.

3DS XL owners will be able to download their free game between January 1 and 31, provided they register by the 15th.

Users who have already registered their console will be able to claim their free game by logging into their Club Nintendo account and following the link to the promotion.

Nintendo recently confirmed the European launch date for its Pikachu-themed 3DS XL, alongside a number of new retail bundles for its latest handheld.

The "extremely limited" Pikachu edition 3DS XL launched earlier this year in Japan and features Pikachu's face emblazoned on the outer casing. It will be available to purchase from December 7.

Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land bundles, meanwhile, will be available by the end of November.
