Upgrade enables PS3 to run PS2 games

New PlayStation 3 users wondering if their PS2 games will work with the new machine will be able to download an upgrade allowing a number of PS2 titles to be compatible, Sony has announced.

The upgrade will be available at launch from midnight on March 23 through Sony's online portal The PlayStation Network or it can be obtained on a disc from the company's customer services department.

"Our engineers have been working overtime, and have succeeded in delivering a significant number of playable PS2 titles for the European launch", said David Reeves, President of SCEE. "We will be adding additional titles to this list in future firmware upgrades, but as we have made clear before, in the future our resources will be increasingly focused on developing new services and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, rather than on delivering PS2 backwards compatibility.”

The update will also deliver extra new features to the PlayStation 3 including support for Bluetooth keyboards and mice, background downloading of content from the PlayStation Store, an optional full Qwerty on-screen keyboard and connectivity to Sony's cancer learning programme called Folding Home.

PS3 users wanting to know which PS2 games will work once the new upgrade has been installed can find a full list by logging onto the: official website.
