"When Rod Fergusson [former Gears of War franchise director] came on board we looked at the game," he told Eurogamer.

"He was there for about a month and he said, 'Look, I've been looking at the schedule and looking at the game and frankly you could really benefit from another three or four more weeks for polish and bug fixing'.

"We talked about it. I knew I'd probably get beat up in the press a little bit about it. But at the end of the day, if it's going to make a better game we're going to do it."

Originally scheduled for October 2012, the project was recently delayed into early 2013 alongside news of a number of key departures from developer Irrational Games.

The box art for BioShock Infinite was recently revealed, alongside news that the original BioShock would be included with PS3 copies in North America.

Levine recently shot down long-running speculation that the title will feature a multiplayer mode.

BioShock Infinite is scheduled to release for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 alongside a number of limited-edition bundles.
