Microsoft announces new Xbox console

Microsoft surprised the gaming world this morning by revealing it will launch a fully updated and revised version of its best-selling Xbox 360 console.

Xbox 360 Elite will include a 120Gb hard drive giving it mass storage capacity, a wireless controller, Xbox Live Headset and - most interesting of all - it will now feature an HDMI port and bundled HDMI cable allowing for 1080p High-Definition visuals to be displayed on an HD-ready television.

Like the PlayStation 3, the new machine will also feature a black, glossy finish as well as signature metallic detailing and - to coincide with its launch - a full range of Xbox 360 Elite accessories will also be released.

"Today's games and entertainment enthusiast has an insatiable appetite for digital high-definition content," said Peter Moore, corporate vice president for the Interactive Entertainment Business at Microsoft. "Xbox 360 Elite's larger hard drive and premium accessories will allow our community to enjoy all that the next generation of entertainment has to offer."

The Xbox 360 Elite will go on sale in the US on April 29 for $479.99 with a UK release expected later in the year.
