Wii U update recommended before gifting, says Nintendo

By
Nintendo has recommended installing the Wii U's latest software updates before giving the console as a gift.

The gaming giant posted a tweet pointing out that recipients will be able to use the console immediately if the updates are performed in advance.

"Giving Wii U as a gift? Pro-tip: Perform system updates before wrapping so it's good to go as soon as it's opened," read the message on Nintendo of America's Twitter.

The Wii U cannot be used unless a day-one update is carried out to install the system's online features, including Miiverse, Nintendo Chat and the eShop.

The update has also been criticised for the amount of memory it uses and the time it takes to install. Turning the Wii U off during installation is said to 'brick' the console, making it unusable.

Wii U consoles will ship with the update pre-installed in 2013.
