Minecraft also performed well in the run-up to Christmas, shifting 17.5 million units across all platforms in mid-December, while Minecraft Pocket Edition cleared the 5 million mark.

The news comes ahead of a planned update, which will be available to download in January 2013.

The update will improve mine carts and add fireworks, a daylight detector and a new type of ore. Subsequent updates will be smaller and more focused, and release every two months.

Minecraft debuted on PC in November last year following an extended beta period.

The subsequent Xbox 360 version holds the record for most first-day sales on Xbox Live Arcade, going on to sell 1 million copies in just five days.

The game is currently believed to have sold 4.5 million copies on the Xbox 360 and approximately 8 million on the PC.

Minecraft was previously named the most popular game on Xbox Live, beating the likes of Modern Warfare 3 and FIFA.
