The electronics giant confirmed it is no longer making the console worldwide following reports from Japan that production had stopped in the company's native territory, according to The Guardian.

Units already in storage and shops will be the last new PS2 consoles in existence, but a select few developers will continue to make software for the DVD-based system.

The move has fuelled rumours that the platform holder is shifting its manufacturing resources towards the development of the PlayStation 4, which is said to be in the works under the codename of Thebes.

Sony's PS2 is credited as being the bestselling console of all time, and even outsold the PlayStation 3 when it first arrived on the market. It also pioneered the use of the DVD storage medium in the gaming sector.

The PS2 debuted in Japan in 2000 and moved more than 150 million units during its lifecycle, making it the bestselling home console of all time.
