Sony: 'Vita sales on the low end of expectations'

By
Sony has admitted that the PlayStation Vita is struggling in the hardware market.

Company chief executive Kaz Hirai conceded that the handheld console's sales figures are "on the low end of what we expected" but remains optimistic that it can recover.

Hirai told The Wall Street Journal that he is not concerned about the device's current performance as "long term is what is important".

Having launched in February last year, the Vita is in its relative infancy, but Sony could be forced to introduce a price drop to boost sales in the absence of upcoming blockbuster software titles.

Sony UK boss Fergal Gara previously hinted that a Vita price-cut will be implemented sometime this year, saying a reduction is "not so much if, but when".

Competition on the handheld front will continue to heat up in 2013, with tech company Nvidia recently entering the sector with the announcement of Android-based gaming device Project Shield.
