Xbox 360 outsells Wii U by almost 1m units in US

The Xbox 360 sold almost 1 million units more than the Wii U in the US market last month.

Microsoft confirmed that its home console racked up 1.4 million units in December, while Nintendo's latest hardware could only manage 460,000 units.

Figures from research firm NPD Group suggest that the Wii U sales are lower on a unit basis than those of the previous-generation Wii in 2006.

However, Nintendo were quick to point out that the Wii U has proven to be a stronger revenue generator than its predecessor, revealing that demand for its Deluxe SKU and New Super Mario Bros. U launch title have been high.

"While the Wii launch established new benchmarks in the United States, Wii U has surpassed its predecessor in perhaps the most important category: revenue generation," said Nintendo marketing executive Scott Moffitt in a statement.

"The demand for the Deluxe SKU, which was essentially sold out at retail this holiday, and the strong attach rate of New Super Mario Bros. U, shows that we have the value and the games to drive momentum in 2013."

The Xbox 360 has held its position as the bestselling console in North America for 24 months in a row, but worldwide shipments recently fell behind the PlayStation 3 for the first time since the platform's launch.
