Atari's arcade classics: 'Pong', 'Asteroids' and more in pictures

Earlier today (January 21), it was revealed that Atari US has filed for bankruptcy, marking another chapter in the company's long and confusing history.

The original Atari Inc. split into multiple divisions in 1984, with the brand changing hands with Tramel Technology and Hasbro Interactive over the next few decades.

When Infogrames bought Hasbro and the Atari name in 2001, it changed the name of developer GT Interactive to Infogrames, Inc and finally Atari Inc. in 2003.

The household name is perhaps the most seminal in gaming, effectively starting the industry with the commercially successful Pong before going on to release Missile Command, Centipede, Asteroids and Tempest in arcades.
