Revealed last year, the console features a top-loading disc drive and a 25% smaller and 20% lighter form factor over the previous slim model.
The console's release boosted PS3 sales by 138% when it was launched in the UK.
During Tokyo Game Show, Sapphire Blue and Cosmic Red versions of the PlayStation Vita were confirmed for Japan.
The latest rumours about the PS3's successor, dubbed the PlayStation 4, suggest it will scrap the DualShock controller and will be 50% more powerful than the next Xbox.
The PlayStation 3 is still going strong, passing the five million units sold landmark in the UK in October.
