A teaser site Murdered.com went up on Friday (February 8), showing a mysterious bell symbol drawn in chalk and including a link to an associated Twitter account.
The Twitter account teased: "What is the hardest case to solve?" along with pieces of an image that form the same bell symbol carved into a birch tree.
Square Enix later confirmed the game in an email to VG247, announcing the game's official title to be Murdered: Soul Suspect.
"Murdered: Soul Suspect is an exciting new game from Square Enix which challenges players to solve possibly the hardest case of all," Square Enix said.
Fans investigating the teaser site discovered an evidence page, which provided a first screenshot of the game when using the password "Ronan".
The image was accompanied by the description: "O'Connor, male, mid-30s, 170lbs, 5' 11".
"Detectives aren't supposed to get bloody knuckles, but I've done a lot of things I wasn't supposed to do. I lived through it all, the beat-downs, the back-stabbing, disrespect most people wouldn't see in ten lifetimes and I never lost a fight... until now."
The game is believed to be in development by Quantum Conundrum studio Airtight Games. Earlier this year, industry sleuth Superannuation reported that the studio was working on a new AAA game involving a ghost protagonist solving murders.
Murdered: Soul Suspect is being developed for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC.
