Born from an ill-fated collaboration with now-rivals Nintendo, PlayStation made a strong debut in the industry thanks to releasing a powerful, CD-ROM equipped console that was both affordable and backed by solid third-party support.
It was followed by PlayStation 2 in 2000 - currently the best-selling home console - and in 2006, the PlayStation 3, which saw the debut of DualShock 3 and PlayStation Move.
The latest PS4 rumours suggest a £300 price point, cross-platform play and that it will offer a touch sensitive controller.
