New Xbox announcement expected in April

By
Microsoft is expected to announce the new Xbox in April, a new report has suggested.

A number of developers and industry professionals have told CVG that they expect Microsoft to unveil the console at a one-off media event.

It's unclear whether an April reveal was always part of Microsoft's plan, or whether the company is reacting to the unveiling of the PlayStation 4.

An unnamed senior Sony official believes that the announcement of the PS4 caught Microsoft off-guard.

"We definitely ruffled some feathers," the source said.

Alleged Xbox 720 patent filings suggest Microsoft's next console will feature two CPUs, one for gaming and another for multimedia applications.

It claimed that the Xbox 720 will launch during the 2013 holiday season and feature Kinect 2.0, 3D technology and the long-rumoured Xbox TV.

Sony, meanwhile, announced the PS4 at an event earlier this week. Compared to a "supercharged PC", it features an x86 CPU, enhanced PC GPU and 8GB RAM.

The firm has since refuted rumours that the PS4 would block used games and that it would require an always-on internet connection.

Sony also confirmed that the PS4 will not be backwards compatible with PS3, nor will save files or PSN games be transferable to the new system.
