Sony to push PS3 for at least 10 years

Jack Tretton, president of Sony, has confirmed that the company is behind the PlayStation 3 for the long term.

"We didn't get into PS3 for the first six months of 2007 - we're into this for the next 10 years and beyond," said Tretton.

Recent sales figures of the machine have left some insiders worried after the LA Times reported that 1.2 million PS3 consoles had been sold in the US since November. The Nintendo Wii, launched around the same time, sold 2.1 million, while the Xbox 360, which had an 18 month lead, now stands at 5.3 million.

Tretton, however, claims he is not concerned. He said: "A million units one way or another at this point isn't going to worry us."

Analyst Billy Pidgeon backs up Sony's claim, saying: "The PS3 is ahead of the market, while the Xbox 360 and the Wii were designed for immediate market impact, I believe sales of Sonyt's next-gen console will ramp up in 2008."
