Wii U UK sales rise by 125% after new releases, price cuts

By
Wii U UK sales have increased by 125% in the last week, a new report has claimed.

Retail sources told MCV magazine that the increase was due to the latest round of price reductions and the release of Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate.

HMV, for example, is selling the 32GB Wii U console with Nintendo Land and ZombiU for £199, saving customers £140.

Wii U sales in January were said to have been lower than anything on record for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, leading Nintendo to lower its sales forecast from 5.5 million units to 4 million units by the end of the financial year.

Previous price cuts by the likes of Amazon and Asda failed to significantly boost Wii U sales, causing some retailers to consider reducing their stock.

Nintendo went on to issue a statement confirming plans to liaise with its retail partners over the coming week to discuss means of boosting sales.

Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate has helped boost sales

"We'll be speaking to our retailers directly over the next few weeks to take them through our plans for building Wii U momentum over the course of 2013," said a company spokesperson.

"We have a strong and broad lineup of software launching this year and we look forward to updating - and exciting - our partners over the coming weeks."
