PlayStation 4: Epic demonstrates Unreal Engine 4

By
Epic has debuted two new Unreal Engine 4 videos at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The first video (below) offers an extended look at the 'Elemental' demonstration first seen at last year's E3 gaming expo, and more recently, at the PlayStation 4 unveiling in New York.

The Unreal Engine 4 demonstration sees a flaming mallet-wielding elemental knight unleash a powerful ice behemoth from a frozen mountain.

The video, which was captured in real-time on the PS4, highlights the engine's ability to provide real-time reflections, subsurface scattering and GPU-powered particle effects.

The only major difference between the PS4 demonstration and the original video is that a new lighting system has been used, according to Eurogamer.

A second video, titled 'Infiltrator' was also shown at GDC, this time running on a PC utilising a Core i7 CPU with an Nvidia GeForce GTX 680 graphics card and 16GB of DDR3 RAM.

According to senior technical artist and level designer Alan Willard, everything seen in the demo was geometrically built, including the mountains in the distance.

Willard also revealed that while some of the features might appear subtle, viewers would notice their omission.

"A lot of the features that I showed you - things like the reflections and the IES profiles - they're all here," Willard explained.

"As [the protagonist] steps through the cloaking field you actually see the boot reflected in the wet panelling below. And this is all throughout the demonstration. And some of them come across as somewhat subtle, but without them your eye would notice the difference."

Earlier at the Game Developers Conference, Hideo Kojima demonstrated Konami's new Fox Engine, while officially unveiling Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain.
