Gran Turismo 6 has been officially announced by Sony.

The upcoming racing sequel will launch exclusively on the PS3 this coming holiday season.

The game will feature 1,200 cars from manufacturers such as Ferrari, Lamborghini and Bugatti, as well as a revised menu system and a host of new and returning courses.

Silverstone Circuit will be one of seven new locations, offering 33 tracks and a total of 71 different layouts.

The game will once again feature a course editor mode, allowing fans to generate new tracks from several kilometres' worth of scenery.

The release of Gran Turismo 6 will be accompanied by a mobile and web app, allowing users to enjoy the game's social features on smartphones, PCs and tablets.

The game was unveiled by series producer Kazunori Yamauchi during a Gran Turismo 15th anniversary event at Silverstone.

"GT6 for PlayStation 3 will bring new levels of authenticity to 'the Real Driving Simulator' as well as introducing stunning new tracks and cars and a revised user interface," reads the official press release.

"A new compact game engine will improve operation and increase the flexibility to expand it with downloadable content."Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi said: "It is amazing to think that it is 15 years since we first released Gran Turismo.

"Things have changed a lot since then and now Gran Turismo 6 is a further evolution of my dream.

"We're pleased to deliver GT6 to PlayStation 3 as we have a very loyal community on that platform."

A number of tweets from the event have revealed logos, in-game replays and data transfers.
An official announcement had been expected to take place at the Gran Turismo 15th anniversary event, following a number of leaks.

The firm previously teased a number of "intriguing" announcements for the coming weeks.
