Xbox One used games, online policies clarified by Microsoft

By
Microsoft has clarified its policies for used and shared games on the Xbox One, as well as its online requirement.

Every game, whether bought from retail or digitally, must be installed to your system and assigned to your profile.

From there, it will be available to access from cloud servers at any time, from your own machine and any other Xbox One you're signed into.

Other profiles can play games on your console at any time, and up to ten family members can log in and play your shared games library on other systems, but not at the same time.

Games can also be gifted to friends. However, the person receiving the game must have been on your friends list for at least 30 days, and each game can only be gifted once, essentially making it a permanent move.

"Loaning or renting games won't be available at launch, but we are exploring the possibilities with our partners," said the firm.

Elsewhere, it is possible to trade-in or resell games at "participating retailers" with no fee to the consumer.

However, it will be down to the publishers to decide specifically whether they opt in or out of supporting used game reselling.

"Third party publishers may opt in or out of supporting game resale and may set up business terms or transfer fees with retailers," it said.

Elsewhere, Microsoft confirmed earlier reports that Xbox One will require an internet connection once every 24 hours in order to play games, and once an hour if playing on an Xbox One that isn't your own.

However, live TV, Blu-ray and DVD movie options will still be accessible.

Finally, Microsoft also addressed privacy concerns surrounding the Kinect by revealing that it can be turned off, even when the Xbox One is in standby mode.

"If you don't want the Kinect sensor on while playing games or enjoying your entertainment, you can pause Kinect," its website explains.

To turn off your Xbox One, just say 'Xbox Off.' When the system is off, it's only listening for the single voice command -- 'Xbox On,' and you can even turn that feature off too".

Microsoft added that users will have control over their privacy options, from automatic or manual sign-in to how data is used.

The firm said that policies are likely to change in future, based on user feedback.

"In the months ahead, we will continue to listen to your feedback as we meet with our partners in the ecosystem to bring additional detail about our policies.

Microsoft recently said that Xbox One's online-only requirement for the end user.

Xbox One will see new game reveals as part of 90 minute press conference next week on Monday, June 10.
