The studio will update the space strategy games with high definition visuals for PC after acquiring the rights from the now-defunct THQ.

Customers who purchase the games through Steam will receive the original releases free of charge, but release dates are yet to be confirmed.

Gearbox acquired the Homeworld license after emerging as the only developer to table an offer when it went under the hammer, though two unnamed publishers also placed bids.

Developed by Relic Entertainment, Homeworld was released for PC in 1999 and its sequel in 2003.

A Kickstarter campaign to fund Homeworld 3 ground to a halt in April after developer TeamPixel failed to secure the rights to the franchise.
