Ridge Racer Slipstream up front value closer to console releases

By
Ridge Racer Slipstream has been compared to console entries and can be fully played without spending in-app purchases, according to Namco Bandai.

Director of global strategy for mobile Alex Adjaj said he "understood the frustrations" of recent portable instalments where you bought an expensive base product and are asked to pay for more cars and tracks.

Ridge Racer Slipstream launches on iOS on December 19.

"If you look at all the Ridge Racer games that have been brought to portable consoles, in particular in the past few years PS Vita and PSP, and you look at the Metacritic score, you see that people complain a lot about the value they got when they spent £40 for the game," Adjaj told Digital Spy.

"They get three cars and four tracks and everything else had to be purchased in the PS Vita store, a quid for every car or something like that. That was ridiculous, right?

"I'm an old fan of Ridge Racer. I bought my first Ridge Racer game in 1995 on the PlayStation, so I can understand the frustrations the fans have.

"Here we're bringing a game with 12 different cars, over 300 different modifications, 12 tracks - and if you reverse, 24 - 100 races in the career mode, then there'll be multiplayer in January.

Ridge Racer Slipstream features over 100 races in career mode.

"And it's Ridge Racer - it's not like Ridge Racer Driftopia. We're not breaking cars. It's the real Ridge Racer with drifting and everything."

While Ridge Racer Slipstream has in-app purchases, Adjaj said that players won't need to pay more than the upfront cost of $2.99 (£1.99).

"Spending more money is basically accelerating how fast you will progress through the game," he explained..

"There are a few other things - there's some downloadables in the game, such as cars and tracks and things like that, which you can get faster than if you would play through the game, and there's car perks and consumables that you would get in the beginning of every race.

"But to be honest with you, there's so much gameplay and so much you can earn, that there's no need to buy more than the $2.99 price point."

Ridge Racer Slipstream will be available for £1.99 / $2.99.

Adjaj continued: "There will be people I'm sure that will buy stuff, but the entire experience is really pretty much like a console game. When you buy a console game, it's £50 and depending on the game, between 20 and 100 hours of gameplay.

"But you don't get everything from the get go, right? You have to play a few hours to unlock everything. This is pretty much the same."

Ridge Racer Slipstream will be available on iOS and Android from December 19.
