Microsoft unveils new 'coffee table' PC

The same team that developed the Xbox 360 has announced a new PC that is unlike any computer seen before and comes complete with a 30 inch screen on its top.

Entitled the Microsoft Surface, the new computer looks more like a living room coffee table, providing enough space for several family members to use the screen at the same time.

Surface also aims to make the mouse and keyboard redundant as users will manipulate it using its touch screen to access files, type documents and other general PC activities.

"(Microsoft's) entertainment and devices has a long history of bringing innovative product experiences to market - such as Xbox, IPTV and Zune," said E&D executive Tom Gibbons. "The new hardware and software in Surface, along with a predominant focus on the consumer experience, support the Connected Entertainment vision - making entertainment more personal, more interactive and more social."

Although Microsoft has yet to explain how the new computer will utilise gaming, they did confirm it will play a key role in the company's 'Connected Entertainment' strategy.

Microsoft Surface will initially be seen in hotels and other public venues at a cost of up to $10,000, but the firm has announced it plans to produce cheaper versions to sell to home users within three to five years.
