MD of Sony Australia Michael Ephraim has said the PlayStation 3 has been outselling the Wii and Xbox 360 almost every week since launch.
Quoting figures from research firm GfK, Ephraim revealed the PS3 has sold 50,000 units in Australia since its March 23 launch.
"Based on GfK since launch, PS3 has been the number one next-gen console, outselling Wii and Xbox 360 every week, except for last week," said Ephraim in an interview with GameSpot.
"We've now sold 50,000 and we're very excited about the fact that it's being sold in retailers that are gaming retailers as a gaming device and other things, but as you'll notice it's now being sold in Harvey Norman consumer electronics stores as a Blu-ray player," he added.
In Japan, however, figures reveal the Nintendo Wii is outselling the PS3 by a ratio of 6 to 1, according to data by Enterbrain.
Nintendo sold 270,974 units of the Wii in the four weeks ended June 24, compared with 41,628 units for the PS3 and 17,616 units for the Xbox 360.
