Electronic Arts' CEO John Riccitiello has fired a warning to publishers that yearly sequels and increasingly difficult games are alienating customers.
The head of the world's largest games publisher, whose own company is renowned for its annual updates of hits such as FIFA and Madden, was speaking to the Wall Street Journal when he made the surprise statement.
On the latest videogame releases, Riccitiello said they are "at risk of being a little less interesting than Facebook and iPods and the next cool cell phone".
"We're boring people to death and making games that are harder and harder to play," he added. "For the most part, the industry has been rinse-and-repeat. There's been lots of product that looked like last year's product, that looked a lot like the year before."
The outspoken chairman stated that more innovation is needed in videogames in order to survive the threat posed by more compelling technology.
