New PlayStation pad to link with PSP
A patent filed in the US has revealed Sony has designed a Control Docking Unit - essentially a new gamepad for the PS2 or PS3 - that will link up with the Portable PlayStation.

According to Kotaku, the new gamepad would enable the Portable PlayStation to be controlled using the PlayStation 2 or 3 device.

The patent was originally filed in September 2005, and describes the analogue stick and buttons as providing "additional functions, features or enhanced operation".

If the new device is coupled with the video out function of the slimline PSP, it could allow players to control PSP games via their TV and the new PlayStation 2 or 3 gamepad making it a full blown games console in its own right.

Kotaku also speculates that the technology could be a feature of the expected PS3 Sixaxis redesign.
