The Sony boss also revealed the unit will transform the next-gen console into a fully-functional TV recording device.
Warwick Light, speaking to The Press newspaper, said: "We're hoping next year – about the same time that Freeview launches its terrestrial broadcasting service – to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder."
Further details about the device and a UK launch are expected to be announced at the Leipzig Games Convention which begins August 10.
