Wii outsells rivals in UK games market

Published Thursday, Aug 16 2007, 12:07 BST | By David Gibbon
Official sell-through figures from Chart-Track has shown the Nintendo Wii is edging close to becoming the number one games system in the UK.

Nintendo's dream machine is currently outselling the Xbox 360 in the UK by over four to one and the PlayStation 3 by more than six to one each week.

Its sales are now on track to top one million UK within the next three to four weeks, which would also see it pass the GameCube's total lifetime UK sales figure.

Reports suggest that if its sales continue, the Wii will topple Microsoft's Xbox 360 lead in the UK before the end of October making it officially the most popular games console in the country.

But with Microsoft's Halo 3 out at the end of September and rumours of a possible Xbox 360 price-cut, the Nintendo Wii's UK dominance is not a certainty just yet.

However, Nintendo is also enjoying unprecedented success with its DS handheld system, which has now surpassed the four million sales mark in the UK.
