MTV to spend £250m creating games

Media giant MTV Networks has announced it is to spend $500 million (£250m) on developing new videogames based on its properties.
The firm has previously enjoyed success with gaming websites and, according to its own research, a reported 47 per cent of MTV viewers are videogame players.
MTV entered the games market last September when it bought Guitar Hero developer Harmonix for $175 million and the firm is also busy preparing for the launch of the highly anticipated Rock Band, which will be released through EA later this year.
“As we take our brands narrow and deep to serve our targeted, niche audiences, we’re putting well over $500 million behind building our games business across all of the brands in our portfolio,” said Judy McGrath, MTV Chairman and CEO.
“I’d like to see more game applications on some of our current big brands across the music groups. Maybe Rock Band will be the next MTV… who knows?”
