A one console future is 'inevitable'

Outspoken gaming boss Denis Dyack has delivered a surprise speech at the Leipzig Games Convention, claiming that the future will see one console become a "unified gaming standard".

Dyack, president of developer Silicon Knights, believes a one console industry could happen as soon as the next cycle of next-generation hardware appears, adding that the history of commoditisation in other industries meant the standardisation of games consoles was an inevitability.

Dyack believes the standardisation would mean lower hardware prices, cheaper development and lower game prices and that it would end confusion amongst gamers.

"Just like a DVD, just like a camera, everyone would know what those specs are," said Dyack. "We're starting to reach a perceptual threshold where the average consumer can not tell the difference between the next-generation consoles. I think this trend's going to continue."

Speaking on the future of a one console industry, Dyack said: "Next generation, you could see people agreeing on one platform. I think this model, if it occurs, will change everything."
