Microsoft's Gears of War has picked up the 'Ultimate Game of the Year' gong at this year's Golden Joystick Awards, which have taken place at the Hilton Hotel on London's Park Lane.

The acclaimed title, which offers a blend of tactical action and survival horror, took an impressive four awards, including 'Xbox Game of the Year', the 'All-Nighter Award', voted for by readers of Nuts magazine, and the prestigious 'Editors' Choice Award'.

Almost 750,000 votes had been cast for the awards night, up from the 540,000 registered last year, with music title Guitar Hero II and Nintendo also notable winners on the night.

While Guitar Hero II received gongs in both the 'Soundtrack of the Year' category and 'Girls' Choice Award', Nintendo scooped 'Publisher of the Year', while its Wii console picked up the 'Innovation Award'.

Elsewhere, Wii Sports won 'Family Game of the Year', while the 'Total Film One to Watch 2007' went to the eagerly-awaited Assassin's Creed.
